I often read poems on online blogs and get annoyed with them. They seem exclusive, they don’t make sense, they are all about the poet not the subject. I have different ideas about what poetry should be – it should be accesible, engaging, and above all else magic. I wrote this poem the other day. I don’t think it is amazing, but its a damnd sight better than many on the blogosphere. Perhaps the point has been made before, but at least you can get it:
Poetry
Poems should have meaning –
Be mysterious but make sense
And use some magic turn of phrase
As their imaginative lense:
Like a sponge or soup or soufle
Like a cake or crab or coke
Like a poor man’s ukelele
Or a sad man’s little joke.
But those that leave silly big gaps
Or rely far too heavily on
Enjembement to allow
The poet to witter on and on
Whilst somehow alledgedly
Keeping to a form.
Those are no good.
As only knowing nitwits
Gain anything from reading
These: they bolster
Their sense of superiority.
And although I’m one of the few,
I do think it good if they rhyme sometimes too.
